GTYC Friday News Round-Up August 1, 2008

It's been a busy week at the GTYC. On Wednesday morning I received a call from the ever vigilant Jay Kraft. He informed me that there was a boat in our mooring field that had capsized over the night and was sitting on the lake bottom. The boat was tangled in an adjacent boats rigging and listing to one side.

Our crack moorings and storage team leaped into action. A team from the yacht services conglomerate of Kraft & Nugent shot down to the club with a borrowed power boat from Dave Conrad. They were able to free the still floating vessel (Airwaves) from sustaining any further damage from the submerged vessel. Scott Reavely then dove down and noted the MC numbers to aid in the notification of the boats owner.

The vessel is a beautiful Bristle 32 owned by Scott & Suzette Blair. Tom Donley was summand to the scene to work his underwater magic. I'm happy to report that by the time the Wednesday night racers were coming back to the Club the vessel was floating and on its way to the harbor for further inspection.

We had a better then expected turn out for the Wednesday night after glow. Several trips were made to Dockside to keep things flowing. It was great to be back home again, even if it was on the lawn. The weather cooperated and sprits were high. Thanks to Mully Foster & Crew for providing some outstanding food !

If you noticed the North Dock sitting high and dry it's not because the lake level is reseeding. A small team of concerned members took Wednesday afternoon and was able to raise the dock to a more functional height. Thanks to Scott Reavely, Scott McManus, Jason Gross, Russell Whitney and a mystery man whose name I didn't catch.

We haven't heard anything from the Insurance Company as of 11:30 today regarding our settlement. They did request some more miscellaneous information, hopefully they are dotting I's and crossing T's to get our claim wrapped up.

Currently we have all of our permits to start the demolition. Unfortunately we are at the mercy of the gas company. The cutting of the gas line is the final item that needs to take place to demo the building. I've found that with utility monopolies service is not always king. They gave us a vague timeline of: “no sooner then two weeks”. That was a week and a half ago. Notice the language “sooner” not “longer”. I'm not holding my breath.

The water is 72.6' at the weather buoy in West Bay . Get out there and enjoy it while you can, it will be back to 32' before you know it.

Check out the buoy website, it's really cool: http://207.74.227.36/ or go to the GTYC home page and select Links from the menu, then Grand Traverse Bay Monitoring Buoy.

Have a great weekend,
